The Sundarbans is a vast forest in the coastal region of the Bay of Bengal, considered one of the natural wonders of the world, it was recognised in 1997 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sundarbans is the world's largest coastal mangrove forest, with an area approximately 6,000 sq km is situated in Bangladesh and approximately 4,000 sq km in India. The region is known to contain numerous species of animals, birds and reptiles, including Royal Bengal Tiger, Chital Deer, Crocodile and Snakes.
Communication & Mode of Transport
A well-laid network of roadways connects Sunderbans to Kolkata, 110 km away. Public transport can be easily hired from Sonakhali (100 km), Namkhana (105 km), Canning (64 km), Raidighi (76 km) and Najat (92 km) - all at short motorable distances and having access to waterways. The principal mode of transport in the Sundarban-land, are the boats. The boat ride through the meandering rivers and the eerie creeks of Sundarbans is bound to make your trip a memorable one.
Though the options for cuisine and food here are modest and limited, one can relish the freshest catches from the water around and indulge in mouth watering dishes prepared from the same. Apart from a variety of traditional Bengali dishes also continental ones. The special attractions for the fish-lover are the lobsters, crabs, fishes and other special sea-foods made from the huge variety of them available locally.
